FIRST ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
Due: Oct. 4
Length: 2-3 edited pages, final draft

OUTLINE FOR AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

1) Get me the first draft of your paper by Sept. 27.
2) Think of a TOPIC that is interesting or important to you. Here are some examples: soccer, language learning, pets, engineering.
3) In your first paragraph, introduce a challenging ISSUE or QUESTION about your topic. Here are some examples: which midfielder uses the best soccer techniques (soccer); is there another online tool besides google translate to check your grammar and vocabulary (language learning).
4) In the next section of your essay, find MORE THAN ONE POINT OF VIEW from different sources (books, journals, newspapers, online sources, people you interview, etc.) who have important information and a variety of ideas to answer the question of your issue. Try to find out why people agree, disagree, have different points of view about issues such as the best midfielder in soccer or the best way to get help online when you want to check the grammar or vocabulary of a sentence in a new language you’re trying to use.
5) In the next section of your essay, give YOUR OWN POINT OF VIEW with SUPPORTING reasons, facts, experiences, research, etc.
6) In your last paragraph, write your FINAL REMARKS: possible solutions, predictions, call to action (what should people do about this issue?)
*NOTE: Your supporting ideas and information may also draw on description, exposition (explanation of important concepts), and narration (stories, case studies, real-life experiences)
